The United States have regularly won this boat class. Last year, however, they missed out to New Zealand. Today, they were back in winning form by getting out ahead of Great Britain. Once in front O’Brien, Latz, Martelli and Luczak of the United States moved away from the rest of the field. Coming into the final sprint the United States had open water and using a 38 stroke rate pace they proceeded to move further away. Great Britain came through to take silver while China held off Germany to take bronze.
