Coming through from the heats, Great Britain looked to be the crew to beat. The British crew of Matthew Tarrant, Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell and coxswain Henry Fieldman got a very, very slight lead at the start and then managed to push away from the pack by the middle of the race. Germany (Jakob Schneider and Clemens Ernsting with coxswain Jonas Wiesen) was the nearest to challenge the British now with a very close race going on for third between the rest of the field.

At the head of the field Tarrant and Reilly-O’Donnell retained a strong 36 stroke rate pace to keep the momentum of their boat going and also move away from Germany. Serbia pulled into third, but it was not clear cut and there would definitely be a wild sprint of the bronze medal. As Great Britain crossed with an open water lead, Germany followed in second and a very happy Serbia took bronze.
