By the middle of the race Skarstein had left the battle for second and that was going on between Moran Samuel of Israel and Liudmila Vauchok of Belarus. Vauchok was the most experienced rower of this leading group having taken bronze at the Paralympic Games in 2012, but it looked like she was far off catching the Norwegian leader.

As Skarstein came into the finish line, rating 35 strokes per minute, the stress of the race showed on her face. This changed into a wide smile as she crossed the line. Samuel followed in second with Vauchok taking the bronze.
