A-Final

This boat class had five entries meaning that crews got to race a ‘test race’ on Friday. In that race China finished first ahead of the World Champions, Poland. Today Poland’s Zillmann, Springwald, Wieliczko and Kobus-Zawojska had good starting speed. But it was China’s Chen, Zhang, Lyu and Cui who got to the first 500m mark in the lead. But the lead was small and there was 1500m of racing still to come. Poland was rating 35, two beats above China. China, however, remained in the lead and was moving away from the rest of the field.

Meanwhile Germany had slotted into third with Australia a length back in fourth. The wind started to shift around to a cross wind as the boats came through in the final stretch. China looked great as they crossed the finish with an open water lead. Poland held on to second and Germany grabbed third.

Results: CHN, POL, GER, AUS, NED

Yunxia Chen (b), People’s Republic of China, gold
“We have had a good race where everything was under our control. Nothing unexpected happened which made the race easier for us. Our tactic was to take the lead in the beginning.”

Katarzyna Zillmann (s), Poland, silver
“That was a very hard race, we found it difficult, but we’re very happy to be on the podium with Germany and China especially after Europeans.”

Frieda Haemmerling (s), Germany, bronze
“This race was not our best. We’ve been facing some problems in training recently due to illness. But we will take this and build on it on our way to Rotterdam.”
