Under-23 Women’s Four (BW4-) – Final

The United States are the reigning under-23 World Champions and they recorded the fastest qualifying time in the heats. They have three new crew members in their boat with just stroke seat Sarah Dougherty remaining. At the start the Netherlands took the lead before the United States powered ahead of them. Once in the lead the United States moved clean away from the rest of the field leaving a battle between Romania, the Netherlands and Great Britain. And what a battle it was. The higher rating Romanians were level with the Netherlands and just a couple of strokes from the line had overtaken the Dutch. Great Britain gave it their all but just missed out.

Meanwhile the United States had set a new under-23 World Best Time. Dougherty, Slamons, Doonan and Brewer now own the new time. They had broken the time set five years ago by Germany.

Results: USA, ROU, NED, GBR, GER, BLR

Kendall Brewer (b), United States of America, Gold
“We have a really strong team and the whole programme has pushed us to this point.”

Ana-Maria Simion (b), Romania, Silver
“The start wasn’t the best of the regatta but we made up for it in the last 500m. Next year all the other three girls will be back in the Under 23.”

Hermijntje Drenth (b), The Netherlands, Bronze
“The Americans started faster then in the other races, but we knew that would happen. This was our best race ever, super fun!”
