The highest number of entries for this regatta was recorded in the men's single sculls (18) and in the women's single sculls (16). In the men's single sculls, it will be difficult to look past London Olympic silver medallist Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic. Having recently won gold at the 2013 European Rowing Championships in Seville, Spain, his toughest competition is expected to come from Germany's Marcel Hacker, who won silver in Seville, and Great Britain's Alan Campbell, who won Olympic bronze at London 2012.

In the women's single sculls, Austria's Magdalena Lobnig will be looking to improve on her European silver medal while Eleanor Logan of the United States will be aiming to better the bronze medal she won at the first stage of the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney, Australia. Joining the field for the first time this season is Emma Twigg of New Zealand who finished fourth in this boat class at the 2012 Olympic Rowing Regatta.

Olympic Champions in the men's quadruple sculls, Germany, will be facing a strong field including London 2012 silver medallists Croatia. Great Britain will be lining up the crew that won gold in Sydney, with just one change to the line-up. With two of the British crew being London Olympic finalists, the men's quadruple sculls event is promising to show exciting racing. In the women's quadruple sculls the German crew that won silver at the Olympics last year and just came back from winning silver in Seville are expected to be the crew to beat in this boat class.

Great Britain's first ever female Olympic gold medallist in rowing, Helen Glover, will be lining up with new partner Polly Swann in the women's pair, while the New Zealand men's pair, unbeaten since 2009, will be showing their form for the first time this season on the regatta course where they became Olympic Champions in 2012.

At Eton Dorney, Para-rowers will also return to their 2012 Paralympic Games venue and be reminded of the great atmosphere experienced last September. The four Paralympic boat classes will be represented (AS men's single sculls, AS women's single sculls, TA mixed double sculls and LTA mixed coxed four). Paralympic Champion Alla Lysenko of Ukraine will line up in the ASW1x and Great Britain will once again race on the waters where they won Paralympic gold less than one year ago.

The 2013 World Rowing regatta season started early in the Southern Hemisphere in late March. The first stage of the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup series was held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, venue of the 2000 Olympic Rowing Regatta. Australia finished at the top of the medals table in Sydney, ahead of Great Britain and New Zealand. This World Cup regatta was followed by the European Rowing Championships two months later in Seville, Spain, where Germany finished at the head of the field with Italy in second and the Czech Republic and Romania in a tie for third.

Dorney Lake, a part of Eton College, has hosted a number of World Rowing regattas in recent years, including the 2005 World Rowing Cup, the 2006 World Rowing Championships and the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships. It is a custom-built, manmade rowing venue along the famours Thames River across from picturesque Windsor, and the home of rowing for legendary Eton College.
