It was Canada that showed early speed. The Canadians had to go through yesterday’s repechage to meet in today’s final while Russia and Estonia took a direct path from the heats on Friday. Then Russia jumped into the lead. This Russian crew includes Sergey Fedorovtsev who was in the gold medal Olympic crew in 2004. Fedorovtsev has gone on to compete at the Beijing and the London Olympics. Russia continued to lead going through the middle of the race with Canada holding on to second.

Did Russia have the stamina to hold on through the second half of the race? Coming into the final 500m Russia was still in front with Canada managing to break away from Poland in third. This order did not change and these countries became the medallists.

Results: RUS, CAN, POL, EST, ITA, NOR

Artem Kosov – RUS – gold
“The bow man and I have been sweep rowers in the men’s eight and this is our first season sculling. For us, it was our first international race in the quad and it was a good practice race for the rest of the season.”

Will Dean – CAN – silver
“There are five people in our quad squad. It doesn’t really feel like competition. We race really hard against each other, but we have each other’s backs. We are working toward the Olympic Qualification in Lucerne. In preparation we will do a training camp in Italy.”

Wiktor Chabel – POL – bronze
“We are happy with the results since it is our first medal at a World Cup. It has been a very tough race, but we are feeling relaxed into the season because we are already qualified for Rio.”
