Damien Tollardo(b), Augustin Maillefer, Roman Roeoesli, and Barnabe Delarze(s) (SUI) celebreate winning the BM4x at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese (ITA).

By the middle of the race Tollardo, Maillefer, Roeoesli and Delarze had nearly a boat length lead with Ukraine, Italy and Germany separated by just a second.

In the sprint to the line Switzerland reigned supreme at a beautiful 41 stroke rate rhythm. Germany, at 40, were flying down the outside and Ukraine, at 36 trying to hold them off.  Ukraine did and took the silver with Germany getting bronze. Switzerland had very successfully defended their title.

Results: SUI, UKR, GER, ITA, ROU, NED

Gold – ROEOESLI, Roman (3 seat) (SUI)
It is unbelievable. It was a challenge but everything went as planned.

Silver – MYKHAILOV, Andrii ( stroke seat) (UKR)
The race was very good. In 2012 and 2011 we have had previous success at this level, but last year we came sixth. This year we trained very hard and we got a medal. We have come from a bad situation in Ukraine. Two of us are soldiers, but being a soldier helps us to be a rower.

Bronze – CHRISTOFZIK, Tom (stroke seat) (GER)

Our start was quicker than usual, it was really good. I could not belive it. Our dream to receive this medal came true.

B-Final

This race got the huge crowd of supporters from New Zealand going. At the start New Zealand had the lead but the powerful-looking Canadians soon took over and once in the lead they managed to eke out a bit of an advantage. The Canadians must have been enjoying this race. At a 40 stroke rate finish they looked smooth and confident. A big sprint by Poland got them into second at the end.
