Poland had a great start in the final of the men’s eight and they got to the first 500m marker just ahead of Italy, the Netherlands and Romania. The margins between the crews remained tight coming into the half way point and the timing system indicated that just two seconds separated the top five boats. This is when the Netherlands did a piece and they got a very small margin.

Now the Dutch and Italy One went head-to-head at the front of the field as they came into the final sprint. This turned out to be an advantage for Italy as they tried to feed off the home crowd. The Dutch, however, had experience on their side and they kept cool and pressed on.

At the line the Netherlands won gold with Italy One earning silver and then Poland got the better of Russia to earn bronze.

Tone Wieten – NED – gold
“We’ve been on a great training camp here in Italy for the last three weeks. We had a really good preparation for this regatta. Our race today was not as good as yesterday, but still good enough for gold. We are going to Henley this year, which we are looking forward to.”

Simone Venier – ITA – silver
“It was a good race. Varese is only the beginning on the path to Lucerne, the final Olympic Qualification. We are a new team and it is very beautiful to work with my new friends. I hope we will qualify the eight in Lucerne.”
