New Zealand's men's coxed pair
Eric Murray (b) and cox Caleb Shepherd of New Zealand get ready for the start of the men's coxed pair heat at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The British crew of Alan Sinclair and Scott Durant with coxswain Henry Fieldman was at the front early on but it did not take long for Murray and Bond with coxswain Caleb Shepherd to get into the lead. Shepherd comes out of the New Zealand Under-23 World Champion men’s eight and he has extended his stay in Europe to help out the Kiwi pair.

By the third quarter of the race Murray and Bond had pulled completely away from the rest of the field. Great Britain was in second with Germany desperately trying to hold off Argentina. Kluge and Egler managed and take the bronze. Murray and Bond had crossed the finish line nine seconds faster than the former World Best Time. The new time in this boat class is now set at 6:33.26. Murray and Bond now own the World Best Time in two boat classes.

The first 1000 metres were ok, second; challenging but the plan was to do our own race.

There is a very heavy wind out there. We had to fight against the weather. It was great.

B-final

Italy only just missed out on the A-final and they made the best of this race. Rating a high 38 into the body of the race. Sergio Canciani and Andrea Tranquilli with coxswain Andrea Riva of Italy pushed into a handy lead and by the middle of the race they looked like they had it sewn up. Italy are the reigning World Champions but the standard has leapt up this year putting the new Italian combination into the B-final. Canciani and Tranquilli maintained the leading position until the end.
