The Netherlands' lightweight women's quadruple sculls
Gold medallists Mirte Kraaijkamp, Elisabeth Woerner, Maaike Head and Ilse Paulis of the Netherlands during the medal ceremony of the lightweight women's quadruple sculls at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The Dutch crew of Kraaijkamp, Woerner, Head and Paulis followed in second at a lower rating. This lower rating seemed to be serving them well as they moved ahead of China. It was now the Netherlands and Germany going neck-and-neck. Could the Dutch use their home course advantage?

As the crowds got louder the Netherlands pulled into the lead with Australia now showing some real speed. Stroked by veteran sculler Hannah Every-Hall, Australia was doing a great job in lane four. In the final sprint the Dutch held it all together to win in a new World Best Time of 6:15.95 – a full eight seconds faster than the former time set by China in 2006. As is the tradition, Dutch swimmers had already jumped in to swim out to their crew. Australia took silver and Germany came through to take bronze.

Results: NED, AUS, GER, CHN, ITA, GBR

Gold – WOERNER, Elisabeth Name (NED)
It was great we were first from start to finish, we have goosebumps, it was amazing.

Silver – EVERY-HALL, Hannah (AUS)
It’s fabulous, it was so fast, it was all about who could keep their composure.

Bronze – THOMA, Katrin (GER)
It’s wonderful, I am very glad. We fought up to the end as we were in fourth.

B-final

The United States medalled in this boat class last year but coming into this regatta injury caused a crew change with last year’s double sculler Kristin Hedstrom coming into the boat. Today they led the way from start to finish under no threat from Mexico in second. The US time was less than two seconds outside of the World Best Time.
