A–Final

This two-boat final had a preliminary race earlier in the week. At this time it was Italy’s Serena and Giorgia Lo Bue who finished first. This duo is very experienced with two under-23 championship titles to their name and they are also junior champions. The sisters took off in the lead over Jennifer Sager and Jillian Zieff of the United States. Sager and Zieff finished seventh at the World Championships last year in the lightweight quad but have very little other international racing experience to their name. They were being outraced today by Italy who got out to an open water lead and never looked back.

Results: ITA, USA

Giorgia Lo Bue (s), Italy, gold
“We knew we would have a good race today. We were quite conscious of the possibilities. We actually wanted to get a record but the wind wasn’t with us. From the start we pushed stroke by stroke until the end.”

Jennifer Sager (b), United States of America, silver
“We just treated this race as if it was a fully packed field. Coming into this race we knew that Italy was a strong crew. We used to row together at Trinity College. We were the bow pair of our eight.”
