Great Britain’s Jamie Kirkwood has been having a great regatta and he sat in the middle lane ready to do battle today. But it was Milso Stanojevic of Serbia who had the fastest start. But there was very little in it with Kirkwood and Germany’s Konstantin Steinheubel very much on the pace. Then Adam Ling of New Zealand did a push that brought him into a position that meant that he could challenge the leader, Stanojevic. Stanojevic took silver at World Rowing Cup III and he now managed to earn a very small lead.

The sprint was on to the finish and just three seconds separated the top four boats. The ratings were rising. Ling, who took bronze at World Rowing Cup III, upped his stroke rate to 41 and still managed to retain long strokes to move into the lead. But it was Slovenia’s Rajko Hrvat, at a 46 stroke rate, that was going wild. At the line Ling scored his first World Championship title, Hrvat grabbed silver and Stanojevic hung on to bronze.

Results: NZL, SLO, SRB, GER, USA, GBR

Adam Ling – NZL – gold
“I am stunned, I got into a really nice rhythm and had a good sprint. I had a quick look and I knew I had to push more to win.”

Rajko Hrvat – SLO – silver
“I wanted to win, but New Zealand was better. It’s my first medal at the World Championships and I am very happy. I had nothing more to give at the end.”

Milos Stanojevic – SRB – bronze
“It’s my biggest success in my career. I am happy because I love the single. The other guys were better, I feel like won the bronze medal, not like I lost the gold.”

B-final

When you see the reigning World Champion in the B-final, you know that racing has been tough. Today, Marcello Miani of Italy, the 2014 World Champion, sat at the back of the field. Out in front was Tim Brys of Belgium. He was matched by Gabor Csepregi of Hungary, but managed to hold off the Hungarian.
