A-Final

In the heats earlier this week Anna Santruckova and Eliska Podrazilova of the Czech Republic recorded the fastest time by quite a margin. They are the silver medallists from the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and also have raced as juniors before. The Czechs led at the start with China trying to stick with them. Jiayi Wen and Jiayao Zheng of China came through the repechage after being beaten by the Czechs in the heat. China and the Czech Republic held a tussle at the head of the field with Germany in third and more than a boat length back.

The Chinese and the Czechs continued to move away from the rest of the field leaving Germany to try and keep ahead of Greece. In the final sprint Santruckova and Podrazilova pushed clean away from China with Germany sprinting through to leave Greece behind.

Eliska Podrazilova (s), Czech Republic, Gold
“Last year we were 4th in the 4x, so our plan in Tokyo was to have a better experience. I’m so happy I can barely talk. I’ve dreamed about this a lot. The venue is good. The heat is crazy, but we got through it today, so I know come 2020 they will manage.”

Jiayi Wen (b), Jiayao Zheng (s), People's Republic of China, Silver
“We didn’t show our best today. We are happy but not satisfied.”

Elisa Patzelt (s), Germany, Bronze

“It was a great race! Really exciting as we were close throughout most of the race. Winning a medal is a great feeling even though our position. I think the course is really fair here and I like the conditions.”
