In the heats on Thursday Russia and the United States recorded almost identical times when they won their respective races. This gave them a direct path to today’s final while all other crews had to come through an extra repechage race. At the start it was Arianna Lee and Margaret Dawson of the United States that had the lead with Russia’s Olesia Zakharova and Ekaterina Glazkova following very, very closely in second. Then Russia pushed into the lead with Melita and Antonia Abraham of Chile pushing into second ahead of the US. The Abraham sisters are quadruplets  with their two brothers also racing here.

Zakharova and Glazkova then went head to head with the Abraham sisters and this moved them away from the rest of the field. In the final sprint Russia, rating 34, had just enough energy left to keep ahead of Chile, rating 35. The United States held on to third, but only just over Germany who came through in the final sprint.

Melita Abraham (bow) – CHI – silver
“This medal means a lot for us. All the hard work for years, we have been putting in so much time. Last year we did 5th and the goal this year was to win a medal. We now go back home and enjoy the holidays.”

Arianna Lee (bow) – USA – bronze
“We followed our plan, which was to go at 35.5 strokes per minute and find a good rhythm. Halfway we stepped down and worked more through power. It was a huge battle against Germany.”

B-final

France led the way over Italy. These two boats were the next fastest times following Wednesday’s repechage and they were making this race into a procession.  France’s Camile Loisel and Adele Brosse of France crossed the finish line with an open water lead.
