Romania had scored the fastest qualifying time in yesterday’s semifinal and they looked to be the favouite crew. But it was Great Britain that jumped out to an early lead. This lead did not last long with a very smooth Romania taking over at the front of the field. Germany, who won their semifinal, was following in third.

Matinca, Pascari, Ianos and Tudosa of Romania continued to look very much in control showing a superior technical style over their competition. Coming into the last 200m the fight for silver became fierce with Germany rapidly closing on Great Britain and Greece at a 44 stroke rate, burning down to the finish. Just 0.45 seconds separated these three crews at the line. With Romania remaining in first, Great Britain had only just held off the German and Greek charge to earn silver and Germany were the bronze medallists. Greece had missed out on a medal by just 0.19 of a second.
