The rowing part of Earth Day

The 41st annual Earth Day saw rowing communities get behind activities around the world. In Bled, Slovenia, the home of the 2011 World Rowing Championships, Earth Day celebrations started with the planting of five trees. This is five of 320 trees that will be planted leading up to the World Rowing Championships. These trees are called Skorz and are an endangered species in Slovenia.

Today is World Water Day and throughout the world people are reflecting on our use of water. As rowers we know the importance. We could not do our sport without it and furthermore we have an acute awareness of the water quality.

The 2010 World Rowing Masters Regatta continues to show that rowing is a sport accessible for life. St Catharines in Canada played host to the regatta that began in 1973 and has developed into an experience that sees novice rowers racing against past-Olympians.

The 2010 World Rowing Masters Regatta is about to get under way in St Catharines, Canada, and nearly 3,000 rowers have signed up to participate. The rowers have come from 34 countries with clubs from the United States and Canada featuring prominently. Racing will take place from 2 to 5 September.

Picture a regatta with a boat park full of 1600 boats, 470 races and over 10,000 seat entries and you have a picture of this year’s World Rowing Masters Regatta. Raced from 3 – 6 September in Vienna, Austria, the regatta attracted 3,500 rowers from around the world to the New Danube regatta course.
