History

University rowing is at the core of our sport. The oldest organised competition of an Olympic sport is the famous Oxford-Cambridge University Boat Race, which started in 1829. Many current elite rowers first began rowing at university.

Given the importance of university rowing to the world of rowing, FISA signed in 2007 an agreement with the International University Sport Federation to cooperate in the oversight of the World Rowing University Championships and other related university events in order to ensure their success.

General Description

The World Rowing University Championships are staged every two years, on the even numbered years. Rowing is also an optional sport in the programme of the World University Games ("Universiades"); this gives gives the Universiade Organising Committee the possibility to include rowing championships in the Universiade programme in odd-numbered years as well.

The World Rowing University Championships are raced over three days, from Friday to Sunday.

Each country is authorised to present a maximum of one crew per boat class.
