EUROPEAN ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

View of the venue from the start

History

The European Championships were first held on Lake Orta in 1893, one year after the constitution of the International Rowing Federation (FISA). Held nearly every year for the following eighty years, the last European Championships were held in Moscow in 1973, before the decision to re-establish the event was made in May 2006.

The re-establishment of the European Rowing Championships has come about because of the inherent strength and depth of rowing in Europe and an increasing need and demand from European countries. The championships will be open only to European national rowing federations that are members of FISA plus Israel. In total, 43 member federations are eligible to be part of the European Rowing Championships.

General Description

The event features the 14 Olympic boat classes racing over 2’000 metres. It is governed by the European Rowing Management Board which consists of three members elected by the National Federations and three members appointed by FISA. The board will govern these championships and other European matters.
