1968 Olympic Regatta Course due to stage the Club Espana Regatta near Mexico City, Mexico.Move over football, in 2011 Club Espana in Mexico City, Mexico, is planning a big deal rowing regatta.

For 24 years Club Espana has been organising the largest rowing event in Mexico. It regularly attracts crews from many Central and South American nations as well as European teams from Spain and Germany. The United States and Canada also add to the average of 600 participants.

The regatta takes place on the famous 1968 Olympic rowing regatta course outside of Mexico City in Xochimilco.
This year’s regatta is nearly upon us with racing from 15 to 16 May 2010 and although club organisers realise it is a bit late to get the overseas participation for this year, they are hoping 2011 is a different story.

Next year the club celebrates 25 years of their regatta and Club Espana regatta organisers are aiming to attract rowers from around the world. Club Espana president Federico Gonzalez believes that would really help the growth of rowing in the region.

All visitors receive accommodation and meals at no cost in facilities located next to the rowing course. Boats are available from the Mexican Rowing Federation for racing and training. There are also opportunities for a longer stay to take advantage of altitude training.

Club Espana president Federico Gonzalez explains the focus, “The regatta format is focused on the promotion and the chance for Mexican teams to participate in many of the races, so the programme includes races for youth, junior B, junior and novices, as well as masters, of course we have races for open men and women, and also for Intermediates.”
