A site visit to Szeged, Hungary, venue for the 2010 World University Rowing Championships, shows that everything is on track for a successful event. Szeged was chosen earlier this year as the host venue of the 11th World University Rowing Championship. The regatta will be situated at the Count Istvan Szechenyi Rowing and Kayak-Canoe Olympic Centre. This venue has hosted several international competitions and it is currently being widened from six to eight lanes as well as upgrading their technical facilities like time-keeping, sound and storage in line with international standards. The Games are to be held from 13 to 15 August 2010 and Lionel Girard, technical chair for rowing at the International University Sports Federation (FISU), has recently been on an inspection visit. Girard met with the organising committee and the deputy mayor of Szeged, Pal Szentgyorgyi. At the conclusion Girard stated in the FISU press release that “everything is provided for organising a successful event in Szeged, the ‘city of sunshine.’” FISU’s executive committee, which recently met in Turkey, also accepted Banyoles, Spain, as the venue for the 12th World University Championships in rowing. This will take place in 2012. Banyoles was the rowing venue for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and also hosted the 2004 World Rowing Championships as well as a Rowing World Cup in 2009. University rowing got a further boost when the 2013 University Games in Kazan, Russia, the Summer Universiade organising committee, proposed to include rowing as one of the optional sports. The proposal was accepted by FISU’s executive committee. For more information on FISU click here. The World Rowing team values feedback. |
