This was sweet retaliation for the United States eight who lost their World Championship title to Germany this year at the World Rowing Championships in Eton. The Canal Cup was raced over 12.7 km on the Kiel Canal, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes in northern Germany. The United States crew included five members of this year’s World Rowing Championships bronze medal crew with coxswain Marcus McElhenney in his fourth year as Canal Cup coxswain. Germany had one change from their 2006 World Champion crew. Thorsten Engelmann had to be replaced by Gregor Hauffe for the Canal Cup due to an injury that was not fully recovered. But the Germans got the better of the United States over the two other events, winning the 500 metre ergometer challenge and also winning the 400 meter, on-the-water, sprint race. In the ergo challenge Germany’s combined wattage of 651.3 Watts fell short of last year’s record set by Great Britain of 715 Watts. Over 150'000 spectators lined the bank despite the town of Rendsburg having a population of less than 30 000. The event attracted people from across the region for a weekend of activities including live music, parties, fireworks and, of course, the main attraction, the Canal Cup. Great Britain crew member Alex Gregory commented after the race: "This is my first time in Rendsburg and I’m fascinated. There are so many people alongside the Canal cheering at us. Incredible."
