Rising Star – November 2018
Marie-Sophie Zeidler is the youngest member of a famous German rowing dynasty but she’s carving her own successful path through the water. The 19-year-old has made the jump to under-23 rowing this year, winning world gold in the women’s eight. Watch out for this Zeidler as she has her eyes set on much more.
I first got into rowing when… I was 14. I wanted to try it because my whole family did this sport and their success inspired me. [Grandfather Hans-Johann Farber won Olympic gold in 1972, her Dad was a junior world champion and rowed at elite senior level, her aunt was an Olympic gold medallist at Seoul 1988 and her old brother, Oliver, followed her into the sport and made the World Championships single sculls finals this year].
Before I started rowing in 2013 I… did swimming, but only for fun and not professionally.
With rowing, I love… the fact that you can train alone in the single or with a team in a bigger boat. And, of course, I like water and doing sport outside.
I train at… the regatta course of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
The change from juniors to under-23 is… not that different because your race is still 2000 meters long, it’s just a bigger event with more competitors because of the lightweights - who don’t take part in the juniors.
My first World Under 23 Championships were… not what I expected. I wanted to participate in the pair but everything turned out differently than planned because shortly before the World Championships our boat split. So, I was in the eight and we didn´t do very well in the final.
The best advice I have had in my career is… to never give up no matter how strong your rivals are. If you want to achieve something, just do it and believe in yourself.
On race day I… always eat nutella bread for breakfast, I check my boat, I have a motivating chat with my coach and then I always do the same warm-up on the water.
I am a bit nervous before a race so… I concentrate on myself, listen to music and I always have peppermint chewing gum in my mouth.
My next goal is… to compete at the World Rowing Championships in Linz in 2019.
Long term I… have always dreamed of the Olympic Games, so I want to take part in them as soon as possible.
When I´m not rowing I… am training to be a police officer.
For fun I… love baking, shopping, watching movies, playing piano…
At Christmas I will… spend the time with my family, baking cookies and of course rowing!
