Rising Star - November 2020
He's a Rising Star who's already a World Champion. Fintan McCarthy, 23, won the lightweight men's double sculls last year. He's from Skibbereen, the same small Irish town as multiple world medallists Paul and Gary O'Donovan. He tells us what's next - and about his lucky socks.
This is year is... very different than expected as a global pandemic caused most of the racing to be cancelled. All in all it’s going ok - taking each day as it comes among all the uncertainty.
On last year's world gold medal: I don’t remember much from the race itself but have watched it back online a lot since. There was a head wind so the race took a bit longer than I would I have liked. It was very uncomfortable so I was happy to cross the line especially in gold medal position!
It was great to be... back racing abroad after more than a year (at the 2020 European Rowing Championships). I think racing is the part that a lot of rowers enjoy the most about the sport so there was a great atmosphere around the regatta course.
I first got into rowing... in primary school as part of a learn to row course at our club in Skibbereen. After that I tried a few different sports which I was terrible at and also had some time without any sport but eventually came back to rowing as I badly needed a hobby and haven’t looked back since!
It’s tough to find a better place to train than... our lake in Inniscarra or the Ilen River on a nice day but other than that I like training in Seville in Spain or Varese in Italy.
On race day I... sweat down (sometimes). Weigh in. Eat and drink. Warm Up. Race. Cool down. Eat. Sometimes for big races I like wearing my red and white socks. They’re comfy but most importantly they’re Skibbereen Rowing Club colours so I feel like I have a bit of the club with me and it reminds me to row hard.
I think Skibbereen does so well with rowing because... there’s a good work ethic and rowing technique instilled in all the athletes in the early stages of their rowing careers and a whole lot of support from everyone involved in the club and the community.
The best advice I've ever had is... Be ice cool. (Dominic Casey, 2019)
My rowing dream is to... win a gold medal at the Olympics!
I now row... fulltime. I graduated just after the World Champs in Linz (2019) and decided then to row full time to concentrate on the Olympics.
For fun or to relax I like to... I like spending time at home with friends and family but usually when not training you’ll find me binge watching Netflix.
