Laila Youssifou (NED)

Rising Star – October 2020

Twenty-four-year-old Dutch sculler Laila Youssifou has just won her first European Rowing Championships gold, winning the women's quadruple sculls.  She's clearly been making the most of a disrupted 2020 - both on and off the water.

I am very excited to be racing and the thrill of competing are what I like most about rowing.

This year has been... a very strange year with, obviously, disappointment about the postponement of the Olympics. On the other hand, I got to spend more time with my family and friends because we were not on training camps all the time.

We mainly train at...the Bosbaan in Amsterdam but during our lockdown I trained at home on the erg or I went cycling outside.

The first time I got into a boat I... was 15 years old. I started rowing with a couple of friends from school. What I especially remember is how much I liked to clean the boats, but that has changed now.

What keeps me rowing is... the feeling of improving and challenging yourself and also the ecstasy of rowing a good race.

The most exciting race I've been in was... the finals of the single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Linz last year. I was in the B-final but I could still qualify for the Olympics. It was a tough race, but eventually I succeeded.

I am studying... Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Delft. My plan was to put my study on hold for a year to completely focus on rowing towards Tokyo but with the Olympics being postponed, I started my Masters degree in April.

When I'm not rowing or studying I... I like to do something creative like drawing for example. Besides that, I like to sing karaoke with my Italian friends in my favorite bar: the Coconut.

My rowing dream is... winning Olympic gold!

My non rowing dream is... starting my own restaurant. And driving a BMW.
