Rising Star – February 2016
Turkey’s 19-year-old Gokhan Guven is a promising rower. Active internationally since 2014, he won two international bronze medals to date: one at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and another at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships. He is hoping to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games and compete in Rio.
World Rowing: How did you discover rowing?
Gokhan Guven: I discovered rowing through my coach. He found me.
WR: What do you like most about rowing?
GG: I like competing most.
WR: Where do you train?
GG: I train mostly in Turkey, at our training camps. The camps take place in Istanbul , at the Ömerli dam, on Lake Köyceğiz in the Mugla Province, and on Lake Sapanca in Adapazari.
WR: What is a typical training day/week like?
GG: We train mornings at 8am and after trainining everyone goes to school. After school at 4pm we train again. We have about six to seven training camps per year. Each camp is about 20 days long.
WR: What are your hobbies outside of rowing?
GG: I play video games, basketball, listen to music, read books. I love driving cars.
WR: What is your favourite music/band?
GG: My favourite music is the song “Ego” from the French artist Indila.
WR: How do you balance training with studying/working?
GG: I study in my free time, so I study after dinner.
WR: Which rowing stars do you admire the most?
GG: I admire Eric Murray and Hamish Bond because they have superhuman power. I would like to be like them.
WR: What is your favourite result so far?
GG: My first favourite result is the time that we got in Nanjing at the Youth Olympic Games in 2014. We won the bronze medal in the junior men’s pair with a time of 3:12.21.
My second favourite result is the time that we got at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships in Rio. We won the bronze medal in the junior men’s coxed four in 6:45.41. Of course I will always try to make better times like Hamish and Eric.
WR: If you could have dinner with any three people in the world, whom would they be?
GG: After my mother, my father and my girlfriend, it would be Andrew Triggs Hodge, Mahe Drysdale and Olaf Tufte.
WR: If you could form your dream men’s eight, whom would you place in the boat?
GG: I would place in the boat Hamish Bond, Eric Murray, Mahe Drysdale,Ondrej Synek, Andrew Triggs Hodge, Alex Gregory, Pete Reed, and Mohamed Sbihi.
WR: If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
GG: I would be an eagle because I like this animal.
WR: What do your friends think about rowing?
GG: They think that is a very very hard sport.
WR: What is your long-term goal in rowing?
GG: My long-term goal is to go to Rio in 2016 and to the 2020 Olympic Games.
