Alexander Hill (AUS)

Rising Star – January 2016

Australia’s Alexander Hill will soon be turning 23. The young athlete already has five seasons of international racing under his belt.

Hill made his first appearance at the 2011 Wold Rowing Junior Championships, where he raced to gold in the men’s coxed four. The following year he earned bronze at the under-23 World Rowing Championships in the men’s eight. In his final year of racing at the under-23 level in 2013, he won silver in the men’s pair.

In the past two years, Hill has been competing at the senior level only and in 2015 he joined the men’s four, winning gold at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne and silver at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette.

For these reasons, World Rowing has chosen to highlight him as a rising star in the world of rowing. Read Alexander Hill's own words.

I discovered rowing… at school in Year 11 (16 turning 17 years old), at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, South Australia.

If I was not rowing, my sport would be… playing Aussie Rules Football.

So far, the most significant moment for me in rowing was… winning two gold medals in World Rowing Cup 1 in 2014. I won one in the men’s four, beating the reigning World Champions, and then also claimed gold in the men’s eight.

A favourite saying of my coach is… Can’t think of one, it’s normally making some sort of joke at my expense.

My least favourite training session is… running… I don’t do it… every day I’m shufflin’.

On the erg, my best score is… I think I broke seven minutes, once, at school.

The qualities I most appreciate in my teammates are… good vibes, all-round good blokes to be around. It’s important as you’re around each other so much.

The talent I wish I had… to have the skills to be a magician.

My non-rowing friends think that rowing is… a lame excuse to everything I can’t attend.

Outside of rowing, I… enjoy hanging out with my friends.

I’m motivated by… the journey and all it entails (keep the faith).

If I could change one thing about the world it would be… to have world peace.

In my fridge, you will always find… Farmers Union Iced Coffee.

What I am most looking forward to about the Rio Olympic Games is… having the honour to represent my country at an Olympic Games (if I’m selected…).

In ten years’ time… I hope to be a real-estate tycoon with my teammate Spencer Turrin.
