Rising Star - December 2011
A fast five minutes with Eve Macfarlane
An avid sportsperson Eve Macfarlane started rowing as a 16-year-old and in her first season Eve won an international medal – a silver at the World Rowing Junior Championships. This year Eve sat alongside the best in the senior world of rowing and not only medalled, but also helped her home country, New Zealand, earn a spot in the Olympic Games for the women’s quadruple sculls. This success came after Eve had to make a tough decision; quit her other sports and focus on rowing. “After going through the New Zealand junior campaign for two years I knew I was hooked,” she says. .
I row because… I just can't seem to get enough of the love hate relationship rowing has to offer!
My goal in rowing is… Just like many - an Olympic Gold.
On the erg, I listen to… Well usually the radio is pumping away in the background of the gym, and if not a bit of dub step goes well or anything with a strong beat to it.
I’m most relaxed when… I’m sitting out in the waves on my (surf) board at my local beach Gore bay or Mangamaunu. I would live in the water if I could.
My least favourite training session is… Is there such thing?
My favourite training session is…The good old 30/40 x 500m, got to love them.
I study… Extramurally through the Learning Connexion, currently doing a diploma in art.
In 10 year's time I will… Who knows, I will ride the years as they come... although there is always is a future goal in mind, but I prefer to live in the present.
My toughest race… My first finals race at World Champs in Bled, Slovenia this year.
I’m motivated by… The crazy girls sitting in behind me in the boat: Fiona Bourke, Louise Trappit, and Sarah Gray.
A typical day… Row, eat, sleep, row. I can't give away the secrets.
I get annoyed when… I don't perform to what I am capable of.
Scull or sweep? Scull
2k or 5k on the ergo? 2km, the real test.
My favourite boat to row is… the quad.
My favourite food is… Eve Apples, New Zealand grown - the best apples in the world. No doubt.
My favourite T.V. programme is… We don't have a T.V. at our flat. The flat banter around the table would have to be the best channel.
My favourite book is… I will never forget the good old children's book, Grandma McGarvey Goes to Sea.
I’m afraid of… needles.
