Introduction

Our network of umpires around the world is a dedicated and enthusiastic group and it makes me very pleased to introduce this, the first FISA Umpire’s Network Newsletter that is dedicated solely to you.

I would like to thank the FISA Umpire Commission for getting this excellent initiative going. There is no sport without rules. Rowing is no exception and the umpires are crucial in the system to ensure that the rules of rowing are correctly applied and followed. These rules, like our sport, are constantly evolving and changing with umpires required to adapt to these changes. We work in a state of continuous improvement and although we try to keep it as simple as possible, the size of the rule book is testament to the large scope of our sport.

I am fully aware that it is no easy job to become an umpire and then once becoming an umpire you will have to constantly keep updated and trained. This newsletter as an excellent initiative to help disseminate umpire information to the network and to provide a forum that is easily accessible.

The umpire network around the world is large with 478 FISA umpires found in every corner of the globe. We have recently welcomed umpire number 1798 as the network continues to grow. I would like to acknowledge from this group the continuously increasing number of women which now stands at 125 and represents 26 per cent of FISA umpires.

This newsletter talks to your network on a range of useful topics. Issued on a quarterly basis, it will be a welcome sight in your email inbox.
