About South Korea and Chungju

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea is located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. Neighboring countries include: People’s Republic of China to the west, Japan to the east, North Korea to the north, and the East China Sea and Taiwan to the south. The capital of South Korea is Seoul which is also its largest city with a population of approximately 10 million people. South Korea has a population of 48,754,657 (July 2011 est.). Chungju is located in the northern part of Chungchungbukdo. Located in the middle of the Korean peninsula, Chungju is a cradle of prehistoric culture, with the Namhan River nearby. Chungju has a population of approximately 634,596.

Rowing in South Korea

Rowing was first introduced in Korea in 1919. The first rowing competition was held on the river Han in 1925. Korea Rowing Association was founded in 1962. The Korean national team first participation in the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.

About Tangeum Lake

Tangeum Lake is an artificial lake. It is located between Chungju Dam and Jojung Dam. It is an ideal rowing lake as the velocity of the water flow can be controlled by the two dams floodgates. The 2007 Asia Rowing Championships were held on Tangeum Lake where 556 competitors from 20 countries participated.

Tangeum Lake will be host to the 2012 Asian Olympic Qualification Regatta which will take place on 26 – 29 April 2012.
