Youth in Focus – November 2013 

Cool, calm and collected: that’s New Zealand’s two-time world medallist coxswain Sam Bosworth. When New Zealand’s under-23 men’s coxed four raced in Linz this year Bosworth was the member of the crew to guide the boat to World Championship silver and as a cox, Bosworth’s place in the boat is just as important than any other. He has trained and earned his way into the crew just like those who power the boat down the course, and he has done so with the passion and maturity of a real leader.  For this reason, World Rowing are happy to name Bosworth this month’s Youth in Focus.

I love to cox because…the feeling of achievement after all the hard work you have put into training and into a race, especially if you medal, is a feeling that lasts a lifetime.

My dream crew would be…I haven’t ever really thought about a dream crew. I would love to cox an Olympic eight with some world-class rowers like Hamish Bond and Eric Murray.

If I could have one super power it would be…I would love to fly or be able to take back time to re-live the awesome memories.  

I would love to teach…Richie McCaw how to row because rowing is so different to rugby.

My biggest strength is…my calm approach when racing. I am not a coxswain that yells and screams all the way down the course, I like to be calm and when it is needed I will get aggressive.

My biggest inspiration is… I don’t have one person in particular; I like to look up to all Rowing New Zealand elite athletes.     

My favourite call is…I don’t have one favourite call but one thing I do like doing is making a call up in each different crew, where the rowers really respond to it. An example of this was “unleash the beast”.
