Youth in Focus – February 2013

It’s maybe not surprising that Kai Fuhrmann is already a two-time World Rowing Junior Champion. The German 18-year-old began rowing at the age of nine when he became too tall for gymnastics. He’s now nearly two metres tall with an erg score to envy. Last month Kai clocked 5:50 at the Euro Open. Kai hopes to be on the German under-23 national team this year and bring a medal home from the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. The double sculls is his boat of choice. Watch out!

I love to row because…It is a sport without body contact and it’s a very fair sport. I love to be amongst nature, under the roof of the sun. I feel free on the water, without the stress of normal life and problems.

My dream crew would be…I haven’t a dream crew. It will happen how it happens. My personal goal is to make the best of my talent and sit in the boat with whoever wants to win the race with me.

In the future I want to…Take part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as sculler and bring home a medal.

First 20 strokes or final 250? I like the first 20 strokes – to lead the field and control the race. The last 250 is no problem if you know you are “the best”.
