Start of the First Italian Sculling Challenge 2006 at Lake Orta, Italy. the Memorial Don Angelo VillaJoin Italy at Lake Orta for the second Italian Sculling Challenge on 4 March.

The mass start involves the singles placed in rows of 25 and, just like Formula 1 Grand Prix, all boats start on the “go” signal at the same time.

Last year the women’s section was won by reigning singles World Champion, Belarusian Ekaterina Karsten. Karsten plans to return along with world bronze medallist, Frida Svensson of Sweden.

Stefano Basalini of Itally winning first Italian Sculling Challenge, Lake Orta, Italy, 2006Winning the men’s section last year, Stefano Basalini of Italy will be back again this year to defend his title. International talent lining up against Basalini will include Vaclav Chalupa of the Czech Republic, Bulgaria’s Ivo Yanakiev (Athens bronze medallist), Vasileios Polymeros, Greece’s first Olympic rowing medallist and two-time Olympian, Germany’s Robert Sens.

The course is 6000 metres long and includes a turn around a buoy. There is also a beginner's distance of 4000 metres.

The event began in 2005 in honour of local oarsman Don Angelo who tragically lost his life in the waters of Lake Orta.

Prize money for the winning man is 700 euros for first and the first woman wins 400 euros. Entries are due by 27 February, 2007.
