This equals about two hours of walking and, although it sounds like a lot, Savage says it is not hard once you include any steps taken, whether it’s around the house, around the office – any steps. Ultimately Savage hopes to encourage people to walk/cycle more and drive less thus reducing their carbon footprint.

Savage is currently in the second stage of her solo row across the Pacific that will take her from Hawaii to Tuvalu. Savage left on 24 May and expects to get to the islands of Tuvalu in about 100 days.

On this second stage the 10,000 strokes pledge has been called Pull Together by Savage and is a follow-on from the first stage initiative. In 2008 Savage rowed the first leg of the Pacific from California to Hawaii. On this stage she highlighted the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean. Savage encouraged people to cut back on using disposable plastic bottles.

The third and final stage of the Pacific Ocean solo row will take place in 2010 for Savage and go from Tuvalu to Australia. If Savage completes the feat she will become the first woman to row solo across the Pacific Ocean.

Savage made her first venture into ocean rowing in 2005 when she rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
