The German men’s eight are currently the World Champions and six of their squad that raced to gold last year, including longstanding coxswain Peter Thiede, came to Great Britain to give Cambridge a warm-up race.

Although Cambridge led at the start, Germany managed to catch up and overtake during the 4,000-metre race and go on to win by three seconds. Two members of Germany’s World Champion eight currently race in Cambridge’s boat. Sebastian Schulte and Thorsten Engelmann make up the stroke pair for Cambridge.

Oxford will race against an American crew as part of their Boat Race build-up this weekend.
