Luini heads Italian sculling challenge

At the third Memorial Don Angelo Villa, Italy’s lightweight men’s double representative Luini left the double behind to race his single.

Lightweight Luini beat last year’s winner Federico Gattinoni by 21 seconds over the 6000m course. This is an improvement by two spots for Luini from 2007. Behind Gattinoni, Luca Ghezzi finished third.

France beat the Italians at their own game in the women’s race. French up-and-coming single sculler Roxane Gabriel beat Italy’s Laura Schiavone by just one second. Schiavone suffered the same second-finish fate last year when she raced to second in a photo finish with fellow Italian Elisabetta Sancassani. This year Sancassani had to settle for third, five seconds behind Schiavone.
