Germany win the Canal Cup, men's eight race

Over the weekend the E.ON Hanse Canal Cup was raced in Germany’s northern town of Rendsburg and over the 12.7km course the Germans won by a slim four seconds over the United States. In this year’s extended international line up the Netherlands finished third with Switzerland beating Great Britain into fourth.

This is the first time Germany has won in three years following the United States taking the coveted Canal Cup last year and Great Britain’s Cambridge University winning it in 2005. The weekend featured a variety of racing and the German win in the eights race became the highlight for the huge crowd after the United States started off strong by winning both the on-the-water 500m sprint race and the ergo (indoor rowing) race.

An estimated 100,000 spectators braved intermittent heavy rain which stopped in time for the highlighted eights race with the five boats enjoying light tail winds and calm waters.
