The first World Best time came in the lightweight women's double when Australia's Sally Newmarch and Amber Halliday broke a nine-year record set in 1995 by Denmark.

The United States women's eight followed this up later in the morning by beating Romania and breaking the Romanian's 1999 world record in the process.

The United States men's then took on World Champions Canada and as the two crews went neck and neck to the line both boats broke the world best time with the US finishing first.
