This year, with the rowing starting the day after, the opening ceremony will be almost vacant of rowers. But one rower will be very much in the spotlight. Eskild Ebbesen of the Danish lightweight four will lead Denmark into the stadium as their flag bearer.

Ebbesen comes to his third Olympic Games already bearing a gold and bronze medal as well as a huge list of medal armory at the international level. As a member of his country's lightweight four he was part of a winning streak that lasted from 1996 until 1999.

The make-up of the ceremony has been shrouded in secrecy but if rumours are correct Ebbesen will feel at home as millions of gallons of water are due to be part of the three hour extravaganza at Athens' main Olympic stadium.
