Fireworks at the opening ceremony of the 2011 World Rowing Masters Regatta in Poznan, Poland

Mimes, hiding from the rain under umbrellas with their faces painted white, opened the show, before the President of the Polish Rowing Federation Ryszard Stadniuk, and Tone Pahle, Chair of the FISA Masters Commission, took to the floor to deliver speeches, welcoming rowers to the city of Poznan.

Key speeches noted that Poznan is undergoing a ‘facelift’ as major works are taking place all over the city to refresh and revitalise the urbanscape, which was welcomed by rowers, supporters and officials alike.

Karaoke was next on the agenda, and the crowds sang classics through the rain, before being wowed by a sensational pyrotechnics display which lit up the Poznan night sky.

Boats, with fizzing fireworks attached were paraded onto the stage, before they took to the water, brave volunteers rowing an eight ablaze. A single scull, was then hoisted from the water alight in to the air up to the finish tower.

A spectacular fireworks display ended proceedings, and the crowds dispersed in to the night, ready to race for masters glory.
